Conference to be held April 28-30, 2020 at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center

ResCon, the premier annual international conference on the practice of successful resilience and disaster management, has announced a partnership with the National Governors Association (NGA) for producing the annual conference to be held, April 28-30, 2020 at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards announced the partnership at a news conference on Tuesday. “I am excited for this partnership between the National Governors Association and ResCon, which will bring more state leaders to this international resiliency conference right here in Louisiana,” said Governor Edwards. “To me, New Orleans is the perfect location to host this important conference, as our state has been both the site of major natural disasters and also the home to some transformational rebuilding, recovery and resiliency efforts. ResCon is about bringing together experts from all over the country – and the world – to share best practices, discuss the future, make connections and plan for ways that all of our communities can be more resilient in the future.”

In addition to the Governor, speakers at the news conference included former FEMA Administrators who served under three different presidential administrations: Craig Fugate, FEMA Administrator, 2009-2017; Brock Long, FEMA Administrator, 2017-2019; and James Lee Witt, FEMA Administrator, 1993-2001; plus Nikki Guilford, Interim Executive Director and Chief of Staff, National Governors Association.

Governor Edwards helped to facilitate the partnership with NGA, which represents the governors of the 55 states, territories and commonwealths. Through NGA, governors identify priority issues and deal with matters of public policy and governance at the state, national and global levels. The organization’s non-partisan status enables the governors to share best practices, speak with an informed voice on national policy and develop innovative solutions that improve citizens’ lives through state government.

“Governors are on the front lines of preparing for and responding to disasters in their states and territories,” said Nikki Guilford, NGA Interim Executive Director. “From advocating for the creation of the Federal Emergency Management Association in the 1970s to forming the Council of Governors a decade ago to strengthen our partnership with the federal government on catastrophic incident response, governors have recognized that their No. 1 duty is the safety and well-being of their citizens. Through the ResCon partnership with the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, governors will have a new forum to highlight disasters they have prepared for, responded to and recovered from, and the lessons they learned that can be shared for the benefit of governors and residents in every state and territory.”

The 2020 event will highlight innovation as a tool of resilience, while integrating a state and national perspective into the conference to create a more engaging and valuable experience.

The Call for Proposals will open in early September.

Speakers at the ResCon press conference included William “Brock” Long, Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) 2017 –2019;  Brian Bond, Vice President External Affairs for Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO);  Craig Fugate, Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) 2009 – 2017; James Lee Witt,  Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) 1993 – 2001; Nikki Guilford, Interim Executive Director, National Governors Association (NGA); and Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards.
